Support Group at Pump It Up

The Autism Society would like to thank our partner Pump It Up for helping us create a spectacular venue for our support group!  Visit www.pumpitupparty.com to learn more about this great party zone!

We usually meet the first Monday of every month.  Our next meeting will be Monday, August 2nd.   This evening can be whatever you want!

Biomedical Discussion Group

The Omaha Support Group has created a separate support venue for those families pursuing biomedical interventions. The Biomedical Discussion group is meeting the third Thursday of every month at 7pm. This is a discussion forum for those families currently involved in biomedical treatments.

The August meeting will be held at Senor Matias’ Restaurant, located at 2505 S 90th St.  If you have any questions regarding the group you can contact Chrissy Cameron chrissycameron@cox.net or Karen Falconer Al-Hindi karen.alhindi@gmail.com for more information.

ASD Family Meetup - Bowling

The Omaha Support Group will be again having a standing bowling date at Sempecks Bowling in Elkhorn every Friday morning at 10am. This will be all summer long. No RSVP…just show up!

We are going at their starting time when they are a little less busy. This is an informal gathering. You don’t need to check in with anyone with the support group…just come and bowl and expect to see other ASD families!

If you register online at www.kidsbowlfree.com you can get your kids 2 free games EVERY day during the summer! You can also get yourself a pass for $25 bucks to bowl along with them all summer long! You will need to pay for shoe rentals but otherwise this is a VERY low cost event!

Again, there will not be any reservations for our group.  This is just an open event at Sempecks and we are establishing it as a meet up time where our families can go bowling and know there will be some familiar and understanding faces!

The Barn

The Autism Society Omaha Support group would like to thank The Barn for helping us create amazing autism friendly events for our families!  They have created open gyms, a mom’s day out,  and even special themed parties for us!   Visit www.myplaybarn.com to learn more about this wonderful resource for our community.

Location:  The Barn, 13504 South 226 Avenue, Gretna, NE  Please RSVP to the Barn at (402)301-6829.

AMC Entertainment and the Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment on a monthly basis with the “Sensory Friendly Films” program.

The movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up, the sound turned down, and AMC’s “Silence is Golden®” policy will not be enforced.   There will be no previews before the film so plan to arrive early as the movie will start at 10am.   AMC is also being very generous and letting our families bring in their own GFCF snacks.   Regular concessions are also available to purchase.

Join us for our Fire and Safety Day

Saturday, August 7
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Come see a rollover car demo, friendly firefighter in full equipment, learn about 911, seat belt safety, and even some basics about first aid.  Come visit the smoke trailer and have a supervised practice crawling out of the smoke trailer window to safety!  Another huge thrill will be taking a ride on a fire engine and even hold your own fire hose to squirt out a pretend fire.

This event is built around our community and our special sensory needs.  There will not be any sirens used and the staff will follow your child’s lead.  This is a perfect opportunity for those kids who might be fearful of the firetrucks to come and learn that the fireman is their friend.

RSVP is required.  You can register online HERE or call Shawn Neff at (402)861-1947 to register.

Check out some pictures from a previous Fire Safety Day.

Here was a local news story about our 2008 event.
