The Autism Puzzle walk is the primary fundraiser for all Autism Society of Nebraska activities. A percentage of the walk proceeds stay with the hosting support group while the remainder of the proceeds go to the Autism Society of Nebraska to support and continue to grow their statewide services.
The proceeds from the the 2008 Omaha walk were distributed across the state to the various support groups that ASN has funded throughout the years. Each existing support group received a stipend to help create events and local supports for their families.
Additionally ASN is using the funds for updating our Parent Resource Booklet, the ASD Annual Conference, as well as financing our statewide Family Scholarships. We have also begun distributing Dennis Debbaudt Law Enforcement training videos to local police departments in an attempt to increase their awareness about dealing with individuals with autism. In the fall, we sent 6 Nebraska parents to a Kansas City conference where they meet with pivotal people who have been critical in passing Insurance mandates across the nation.
Another critical development in 2008 was the re-design of our web site. We are now able to maintain it ourselves allowing us to provide our community with real time information. ASN hosted town hall meetings in four of our communities and continued to grow our online support network on our listserv. We finished off 2009 by having our community complete a survey of needs and are excited to move forward in 2009 to create a Nebraska that better meets those needs!
As you can imagine the success of the Autism Society of NEBRASKA relies on the support from the entire state of Nebraska. We need everyone from Omaha to Ogallala to champion the Puzzle Walk. This event is what makes it possible for us to build our network of support for autism across the state and best of all it keeps the funds here in Nebraska helping OUR families.
Last year’s walk was a phenomenal success and has helped ASN advance many of our goals. But we have many more goals and much more to do so we are planning for the 2009 Autism Puzzle Walk be even bigger and even better (and hopefully much much warmer!!)
